Succubus: Elysian Fields [DLC] (PC)

Given all the projects under Madmind Studios wings these days, its somewhat surprising to see yet more DLC released for Succubus – especially given Tormentress wasn’t really that long ago either. Is there enough to sink your teeth in here for the surprisingly low price (£4.29) of entry? Lets take a quick look.

Previous DLC may have added some characters or story to the fray, but this one doesn’t really seem to. You load it up and you’re left standing in front of a portal. Some intro, or even voice lines from Vydija, would have done wonders for adding a little extra. I guess the real meat of the DLC is in the gameplay

There’s several bosses from the main game that will act as your roadblock to greater things, defeating each follows a similar path to their story attack patterns, and collecting their heart unlocks new gear. There’s only one new open stage, with the several bosses to defeat, so you’ll likely get around 4 hours or so depending on how much you explore.

Bringing the hack & slash setup of the base game and mixing it with a rougue-lite element almost seems like a perfect fit. You’ll head out into the fields and take on the fodder to level up, a few choices are available to choose from when you do, with plenty of drops for further customisation. These range from exclusive weapons to new abilities, and its something you will need as enemy count can get pretty wild at times – you’ll need the power to level the field.

There’s a surprising amount of other things to find around the map as well, secrets to find in various places if you survive long-enough for example, as you look to call out the current boss. The boss fights can be tough if you haven’t ranked up enough getting there, luckily enemy waves appear as well to get that health up with finishers, So you don’t need to grind for too long either. As long as you do about a dozen levels and pick the right upgrades along the way, the first few bosses shouldn’t pose much of a threat.

Taking a break from the fire & brimstone of hell, the DLC gets a whole new area to explore. In place of hell we now have clear blue skies and rolling hills of swaying grass which can look picturesque if you get a breather to take it in the views. Outside of getting trapped on trees or rock formations, I’d be surprised if you can see much of this beauty as the blood and body parts start to fly amidst the fireballs and lightning. Enemies etc are pulled from the base game, so no improvements there, but Vydija obviously makes the new outfits you unlock look good.

A lot of the audio is re-used from the main game, so there’s not much to say on the audio front. Performance on the other hand does warrant a mention. No crashes or anything really, outside of wonky controller support that doesn’t effect main game?, as it was pretty stable. No, the musou style enemy counts can eat away at any headroom your system has. My PC (R7 5800X3D/32GB/RTX 3090) had some nice headroom running the main game 4K/60, but here that evaporates as all the enemies and effects fill the screen. You’ll be hard pressed to lock it down

Elysian Fields doesn’t really add any valuable lore to the base game, instead trims the fat and ditches the puzzles & platforming to focus on the combat with a roguelike edge. Sure it’s still a bit janky, but for the price of a Starbucks you can partake in an orgy of blood & violence with everyone’s favourite Succubus for at least a few hours. Need I say more for Succubus owners?
