SENSEs Midnight (PC)

SENSEs: Midnight is a spin off title from SENSE: A Cyberpunk Ghost Story, possessed by the ghost of PlayStation past. We take a look at this Cyberpunk PSX aesthetic throwback.

SENSEs: Midnight follows the exploits of Kaho who is streaming to her friends her adventure of breaking into a park and investigating a mysterious door that is said to be haunted, aptly named The Midnight Door.

SENSEs: Midnight is a “Cyberpunk Ghost Story” and perfectly matches that description with its aesthetics, it uses a PlayStation 1 graphical style which still looks really good and is aided by the main location being a public park.

The main character has a curious Fanservice style design which I wasn’t too into but the main demon that chases you around more than makes up for it.

As previously mentioned SENSEs: Midnight is a PSX throwback but it also falls within the genre of Survival Horror, taking it quite literally the game features heavy use of the infamous Tank Controls and Camera Angles rather than just following your character from behind.

Kaho must explore the park with all the speed of someone suffering with the squits even at full run and of course needs to spin around on the spot to turn around.

You’ll navigate the park and be constantly messaged by your friends via Instant Message which looks like the most energetic Discord chat in town, this helps differentiate this title from its kin but also provides it with a little charm that got quite a few smiles from me through the game.

It’s the usual shitck of finding items which with your limited inventory can be a pain, you can leave any items scattered around the park but you best remember where you put them, remember the pain of Resident Evil Zero? Well it’s back here sadly.

Puzzles come in a few varieties but nothing particularly as head scratching as the Piano in Silent Hill or some of the more out there puzzles in the recently released Tormented Souls.

There is no combat to be found in SENSEs: Midnight, instead you’ll be taking photos to dispose of weaker ghosts and dodging the main ghost which chases you around the park, fortunately clever dodge work or hiding in the bushes gives you enough time to work with in regards to a reprieve.

SENSEs: Midnight is a fun but short 3 hour romp inspired by titles such as Clocktower and other PlayStation 1 horrors, I haven’t yet played the other SENSEs title but I never felt like I couldn’t grasp what was going on meaning it’s easy to play standalone.

The game doesn’t do anything particularly unique outside of its setting and it does feel like it’s a taster of what’s to come, fortunately it’s budget prices and isn’t a massive time demand, recommended for vintage horror fans.

Summary

A short budget cyberpunk romp that should have some interest to horror fans.
